TV vs. display - an honest comparison and what you really need to know

What is the difference between a TV and a signage display? What are the advantages and disadvantages and why will you not be happy with a TV set for digital signage? We are asked these questions very often and that is why we would like to try to offer you an honest and transparent overview here and show you the right signage solution for each application location.

TV vs Display

TV vs. display - clear the ring for the direct comparison:

Duration

A TV is designed to run for up to 6 hours a day. Longer runtimes risk the loss of the manufacturer's warranty.

A signage display is usually designed for a daily runtime of 12 - 24 hours per day and may run permanently within this time depending on the runtime release. This so-called runtime release is always listed transparently on professional signage displays.

Brightness

A TV is meant for home theater environments, which is why the luminosity is usually severely limited. Everyone knows the problem when the sun is shining in summer and you have to lower the shutters so that you can still see something on your TV. Even though modern TVs can have quite high values in peak today, this high brightness can only be maintained for seconds and then the brightness immediately drops again.
A signage display is divided into brightness values, which allows you to see directly whether a device is sufficient for the planned location or not. This saves a lot of trouble and frustration. If you don't pay attention to the brightness, the whole effect fizzles out because the content is not displayed as it was actually intended.

Viewpoint

A TV set has a limited viewing angle and is usually not anti-reflective. Reflections in particular are a real problem for digital advertising. With a TV, a reflective image is desirable because it significantly increases colors and brilliance. In a living room, you usually don't have 20 people sitting around a large table either, so the viewing angle isn't that important.
A signage display usually offers a higher viewing angle and, with a few exceptions, is usually non-reflective. Especially in larger, bright rooms with daylight and many people in the room, who are also sitting at a large conference table, these values are very important and quickly determine the success or failure of your presentation. Reflections are not desired in the signage area.

Image optimisation

A TV set is designed for movies and broadcasts (moving images for action scenes, among other things). Office presentations or drawings are therefore often blurred or poorly displayed. Even the now popular 4K resolution does not change this.
A signage display is optimized for the presentation of office applications and the high-quality display of fonts, lines and drawings, but is also convincing in the perfect presentation of your advertising videos.

System on Chip

A TV set has a cable or SAT connection and usually also integrated connections to streaming providers and app stores. For private home cinema, these are great advantages because you get many more options. But this networking also does not offer the privacy desired in the B2B sector. The complete orientation of a TV is designed for use in the living room and then ends there.
A signage display usually does not have an integrated tuner. This is usually not necessary and you do not pay for anything you do not need or do not want. An app store connection is usually not possible for security reasons. Here, privacy is in the foreground. On the other hand, digital signage displays usually include integrated media players or other functions, such as a whiteboard, Office365 connection, remote desktop connections etc.

Assembly

A TV set can usually only be operated in landscape format. An installation in portrait format would only be feasible in conjunction with a PC and a software solution. However, based on our experience, we do not recommend such solutions. Most manufacturers also risk losing the manufacturer's warranty because the correct ventilation is no longer guaranteed. Even if one were to do without it, one would have to constantly switch back and forth manually between the resolutions. A TV is designed to display movies in landscape format, and that is where its strength lies.
A signage display can usually be used in portrait and landscape format and is also suitable for use in video walls. In the meantime, there are manufacturers such as Samsung that no longer integrate the IR receiver in the frame, but instead install it centrally behind the panel, which makes these displays perfect for integration in media furniture. Many displays now have a loop-out (signal looping through), which means that the displays can only be connected to each other via HDMI or Displayport cable to create a professional video wall. No switcher or other external hardware is needed for this.

Use in the shop window

A TV set cannot be hung in a shop window. If you try to do so, within a few months the TV will have black spots in the panel, because TV sets do not tolerate direct sunlight. In addition, there is a risk of losing the manufacturer's warranty, because TVs should not be exposed to high heat and UV radiation. Also, the brightness would not be sufficient in the shop window. TVs do not have a high basic brightness and, as already mentioned, are not anti-reflective. If you hang a TV in front of a window pane, the pane takes away another 100 cd/m² of brightness. As soon as the sun shines, viewers would see distorted colors, if they could see anything other than themselves. If viewers with polarized sunglasses look at a TV set, not much more than a dark surface can be seen.
There are special signage displays for use in shop windows. These so-called semi-outdoor displays are designed for use behind shop windows. These displays usually have an adapted ventilation system and are equipped with a very high brightness, so that customers can see all content clearly at all times, even in direct sunlight on the display. Thanks to integrated brightness sensors, shop window displays adapt to the brightness conditions. At night, the brightness is automatically lowered, while in sunlight the brightness is increased. This not only reduces operating costs, but also power consumption. For wearers of polarized sunglasses, special films are applied to these window displays and ensure good visibility even under these conditions. Window displays are additionally protected against disturbing reflections.

Switching on and off

A TV set should be able to be switched on either via the remote control or via a receiver. As soon as the receiver is switched off or the button on the remote control is pressed, the TV should switch off. Automatic on and off times are not necessary for a TV. In the event of a power failure, the TV has to be restarted manually. However, that is absolutely sufficient for private users and nothing more is needed.
A signage display should usually switch on and off at a certain time and then also start with a predefined source or a schedule. Even in the event of a power failure, it must be ensured that the displays automatically resume the defined sequence and display the advertising content. Almost all modern signage displays are prepared for these scenarios.

Environmental conditions

A TV set may only be used in very narrowly measured room temperatures, and the room humidity must also not be too high. Dust is also still a known problem, even with modern TVs. If the dust load is too high, the durability suffers over the years. The glass of a TV is neither particularly protected nor does the casing have any special reinforcement.
A signage display usually offers higher protection against moisture and can also be used in higher or colder room temperatures. Almost all of our manufacturers now offer displays with IP certification (protection against water - / dust / heat and cold), as well as high-quality vandalism protection. This is good for longevity. Especially when used in the B2B sector, reliable availability is the be-all and end-all.

Connections

A TV usually only has HDMI and still often VGA interfaces. Professional interfaces, such as DisplayPort, DVI and RS-232 are usually not part of a TV's connectivity. However, this is usually not necessary for a TV.
A signage display offers a higher variety of connections (including USB-C, DVI, DisplayPort) and RS232 interfaces. Often, an HDBaseT port is also available, which allows power and signal transmission via a single CAT cable. Nowadays, signage displays can also be connected directly to a webcam for quick and easy video conferencing.

Warranty

A TV set usually has to be sent to the manufacturer in case of a warranty claim, and the warranty period is usually just 24 months. It is important to note that you do not have a display available during the repair and this downtime can quickly become very expensive. Warranty extensions always have to be paid for and do not protect against downtime.
In the event of a warranty claim, a signage display is usually repaired or picked up or replaced directly on site. This dramatically reduces downtime. The warranty period is usually 36 months. Warranty extensions are also usually subject to an additional charge, but can be customized and adapted to your needs for larger purchase quantities.
A television is designed for the living room and shows its clear advantages there, but as soon as you want to use a television in the commercial sector, often forgotten and underestimated problems arise. You should be aware of these before you buy, otherwise it will be expensive and, above all, usually not really good.

Price-performance ratio TV vs. display

Of course, we understand objections such as the lower purchase costs of a TV compared to a professional signage display. If you have a small office and only hold one hourly video conference a day, a professional display is often more expensive at first glance and breaks the budget.

However, you would have to think a little around the corner at this point: you use the device in a professional environment and then you want to be able to rely on it, because in the worst case a prolonged failure of the device costs a lot of money or even threatens your existence. Picture quality is another such factor. Content must be perfectly recognisable at all times and colours should not be distorted. If you save at the wrong end in such environments, the damage is done quickly and with professional signage displays you could avoid these problems to a large extent.

Today, companies have to stand out from the crowd and convince customers of their quality. Let's assume you have a shop with a shop window and want to present digital advertising to potential customers. If you now use a TV set in this place, your customer will recognise this at first glance, because as soon as even a little sun shines on the display, the viewer will hardly be able to see the displayed content, if at all. But even the shine of the picture, which is an absolute plus for TVs in the living room, is a problem in this case, because customers are more likely to see themselves in the screen than your advertising, even in bad weather conditions. So if you don't want to display your more expensive investment as a make-up mirror, you now have a problem. By the way, these points do not only apply in shop windows, even an office room with direct sunlight can bring the same effects and outdoors a TV would be a total failure within a few hours.  This all then looks very unprofessional and tends to create negative feelings among customers and employees. In the end, it is often the case that a well-intentioned idea does not have the desired ROI and the wrong conclusions are quickly drawn from it.

If you still want to use a TV set, you have to be able to live with the fact that the picture quality and performance of a TV are not designed for the application and you have to accept cutbacks. The daily running time of a TV set and other operating conditions should also never be disregarded. If you buy twice, you buy dear. Not just a phrase, but often experienced truth.

Professionalism has its price - but it's worth it!

In the end, you simply have to decide whether professionalism is worth the extra price. At this point, let us work with a provocative statement:

You don't go outside in pouring rain with a woollen pullover and then wonder why you are soaked through from top to bottom.

And that's how you should see it with digital signage, too. A television cannot be a digital signage solution. The devices are neither designed nor suitable for this. The whole thing looks different with professional signage displays. There is a suitable solution for almost every application. Not only do the local conditions play a large and important role, but also the reliability and service factor. If the worst comes to the worst, the manufacturer will usually come to you and have the unit repaired on site in a timely manner. However, there are also manufacturers who offer a 1:1 device exchange service and, if necessary, also score with a 24-hour response service. However theservice is handled in the end, the manufacturers always try to offer a fast and reliable service for professional signage displays. Forprofessional use, it is therefore always worth spending a little more money in the end.We say this not only as a dealer of digital signage solutions, but also from our many years of experience. We would be happy to show you thedifferences in adirect comparison of brightness in our EXPERIENCE CENTER in Berg near Neumarkt and you can see for yourself.

And the winner is

TV vs Display

It's clear: for digital advertising and in the B2B environment, there can only be one winner:

Technical knockout for the TV. The winner is the digital signage display.

Our conclusion on the TV vs. signage display comparison

A signage display is designed for use in the commercial sector and all functions are precisely designed for this purpose. A TV set has its strengths in the living room and home cinema and should therefore only be used there. For this reason, manufacturers keep these two areas strictly separate, because the devices are clearly different, even if this does not always sound immediately understandable to the layperson. But this is exactly the reason why you will not find professional displays for sale in the well-known and popular B2C markets, and why professional dealers like us also do not have direct access to classic TV sets. If you want to operate digital signage properly and professionally, there is no way around a signage display.

Half good was never good enough. Therefore: either you do digital signage right or you don't do it at all.

In this case, unfortunately, there can be no two opinions.
